  • BIOS on some mother boards check the CPU fan speed. Check whether the fan is running as fast as it is required. I faced a similar problem. It got rectified when I changed the CPU fan. The cheap RAMs sold in the market are not tested for quality control to save manufacturing costs. That problem could also be due to the RAM. I always buy good quality RAMs like Transcend or Kingston.
  • It sounds like you may have some BIOS configuration issues, bad input device (Keyboard, mouse, etc) or a bad drive.
  • Having tried everything, including adding 1MB RAM! I continued to have the same trouble. Had a thought about the motherboard battery - changed this and eureka the problems seems to have been solved. Let's hope this will last. Thanks everyone for their comments and help.
  • I had a similar problem, and found this page during my attempts to solve it. In my case the computer hung completely just after identifying its memory type (DDR333), but before actually testing any of it. It never recovered, at least not during a period I was prepared to wait (about 2 minutes). I tried all the solutions offered here without success, plus some others from the trouble-shooting guide of my motherboard (such as removed non-vital PCI cards, re-seating cards and memory, removing NVM battery for 10 minutes), all without success. However computer booted perfectly after disconnecting an external powered USB port expander. It seems this was in a funny state that was hanging the computer. At first I could not understand why this should cause a computer to hang so early on in the boot sequence but of course the BIOS has to search for a USB keyboard so it can tell if "F2" has been pressed to enter BIOS set-up. Power cycling the external port expander completely resolved the problem.
