  • The residual moisture hanging around in the air scatters the light that hits it. If there is mist between you and the sun, the light coming from the sun will strike the mist, and the water droplets will act like tiny prisms, splitting the light into bands of color. The mist also makes the light visible, much like smoke will make a laser beam visible, by scattering it toward your eyes.
