  • Yes. The person may not know the answer but they may know the answer given is wrong or misleading
  • its not fair but alot of things in life is not fair
  • I can understand why to some it would be an issue, but of course it's fair! No one here is obligated to explain themselves just because an answerer is upset behind losing a couple points. People, stop taking this "points" business so serious.
  • What isn't fair is that people give negative answers because they don't like the question or something else, not because it wasn't "helpful", which is the criteria originally stated by AB staff.
  • This is a topic that has been debated endlessly on Answerbag for as long as the site has been in existence. My own view is that it's a bad idea to downrate an answer without providing a comment, unless the answer is very offensive. I'm here to be helpful and to enjoy the community. If someone has provided an answer that's poor enough to deserve one of my relatively-rare downratings, there are 2 purposes I want to achieve: a) correcting the view of the person who wrote the answer and b) pushing it down in the pile of answers toward the bottom to "protect" others from the answer. There's no way to achieve (a) without saying something generally. Also, I like the "courage factor" required with this policy -- having to put myself on the line and identify myself with a comment makes me think twice about criticizing another person's work... that's something good, in my opinion.
  • Well there are some answers that clearly don't do what was asked, so...there really isn't an explanation other than that it's wrong. It's irritating when people downrate for no apparent reason, but you might not agree with their reason anyway so...sometimes it doesn't matter whether you give one or not.
  • Why don't you down rate and comment and see what happens. Then you will see why we don't have to leave a comment to down rate. I think it's fair.
  • I personally think it's fair. There are questions and answers that have been down rated that don't deserve an explanation. It's obvious why they're down rated. Maybe you haven't seen them yet, but they do exist.
