Because we like to answer the questions in the wrong categories too! Isn't Answerbag the gathering place for dyslexic people?
-
Perhaps they were asked by new users who don't know any better. Sometimes a question could go under more than just one category. Also I'm not sure if I completely approve of the organization of the categories. Some topics need to be reorganized.

I believe these are asked by new users who are not aware that the asker must specify the category. If they are reading answers in 'Conundrums' and think of a question not related to it, they just go to the 'Ask a question' link and start typing, not realizing that this will post the question under 'Conundrums.' That said, us old chokes will occasionally forget, too, and just ask a question under the wrong heading. The moderators move them sooner or later.

Sometimes you have a question you feel shouldn't be catergorized, and it's hard to place it exactly where it should be.
-
I really don't think there are enough catagories. Sometimes a question just doesn't fit into anything. Take TV shows or movies for example. They have some examples of specific shows or movies but not all...how are you supposed to decide? I usually just choose a general catagory for my questions.

1) Lazy users - They don't want to take the time to learn the near 10,000 categories* or category structures, nor to step through the subcategories of subcategories of subcategories (in some cases) to find the correct one. (* as of 02/06/2009) 2) Confused users - Because of the number of categories, and the fact that many questions can fit into multiple categories, people don't seem to understand to drill down through the subcategories until you can't drill any more - because you've reached the last group of subcategories for that main category, or because none of the next set of subcategories doesn't fit (but the category/subcategory you are currently in does.) 3) About Answerbag and Outside the Bag seem to be "catch-alls" for ANY question. About Answerbag is for questions ... ABOUT Answerbag. All subcategories are related to Answerbag. Outside the Bag are for questions that will NOT fit in ANY category "within the bag". These are the extremely strange, usually conversational, questions. 4) People don't know how to use the "Search Categories" function, either on the Questions page, or the Wrong Category Flag list. ...a) Type the subject of the question. If no category found seems to fit, type in a more general category... Say, instead of "VIN Number" for the question "Where can I find the VIN number on a 1981 Chrysler Cordoba?" try "Cars" or "Auto". ...b) If a possible correct category or subcategory comes up, highlight and click it. ...c) Check what it's a subcategory of, AND its subcategories. ...d1) If the category that it's a subcategory of doesn't fit, start over at a) ...d2) If one of it's subcategories fits your question click on it. ...e) Repeat c and d(both 1 & 2) until you've drilled down as far as you can. ...f) ALWAYS select a category INSIDE the bag over an Outside the Bag category. 5) Some categories seem to be in strange, and sometimes, inappropriate locations. In some ways, they make sense, but in others, they don't. And because they are the best NAMED categories, those are the ones selected. However, users MUST be aware that in SOME cases, the same-named categories exist as subcategories of others... For example, Saturn is not only a car, but a planet... Choose correctly. 6) I think in a FEW cases, people may put questions in wrong categories on purpose to allow friends to get the five (5) points for flagging them into a more correct category. Of course, this is a form of cheating, but I'm sure it happens. There are more reasons, I'm sure, but that's a start. ;-)

It's not always easy to know which is the best category. I am however glad to see there is only one incorrect category. That makes finding a correct category much easier

Because people don't know any better or they don't care. They could be lazy and in too much of a rush to find the best category. But it really helps in getting better and more answers to their questions. Even if they were just asking for points, they should care where their questions are so they will get more points since points and answers go hand in hand.
