with the black fungus, to get a mystery mold, apparantly you have to kill it with a critical hit, (which explains why i've never got one!), with rare mushrooms, as the answer above states, look at their expressions, if you wait for it to do the same one 3 times in a row (after executing each time of course!) the chances of getting a mystery goo are higher than casting 3 different types of magic on it
