  • I would not label Carl as the cheater but I would certainly hold his crew chief accountable for this infraction. It's not the first time this has happened and it's no secret the advantage a car picks up by not having the oil tank sealed. The horsepower improvement is very tempting; remove a single bolt and gain 25 HP? or stand the chance of back pedaling and losing the race?. In this case he got caught. I think the penalty is fair. Losing the crew chief for six races with Robbie Reiser as a back-up is no biggie but losing the 100 points and the 10 points earned for the win in the "race for the chase" will be critical down the long stretch. I don't personally think the monetary fines are of any impact seeing that Carl often makes huge donations to charities equal to that much or more. I personally think it's a bum deal for Carl himself because he is a pretty straight shooter and I don't believe in my heart that he had any knowledge of this happening, he was just the driver. I would also consider taking the "V" away from Carl and give the team a DQ for the race. That would send a very strong message to anybody that thought about bending the rules in this area. Has anybody heard of safety wire? If I were a crew chief and I knew this was a potential problem, (and they all do), I would spend the 5 minutes it takes to safety wire the bolt so that it cannot come lose.
