  • It depends on the scholarship. Some specify what the money can be used for (tuition, books, lab fees) while others are unrestricted.
  • I had a college scholarship that paid for my room and board only for 4 years... I took 5 years to complete college so I paid for that the last year. But my scholarship also gave me money for books. =)
  • It depends upon the type of scholarship(s,) and possibly on the school as well. I got through 4 years with 2 different types of scholarships, and came out with 2 Bachelor's degrees, and a decent bank account. I bought a brand new car and a house within 3 weeks after I graduated from college. I got one scholarship that was for academics and leadership, awarded through the office of the president of the college I chose. It was granted for all 4 years, including tuition, fees, room and board. The only "catch" was that it was re-evaluated each year...you had to maintain a 3.5 GPA overall to keep it. The other scholarship was a NY State Regents' Scholarship. That covered my books, and gave me a bit of spending money. It was in the form of a check every school year, and it didn't specify how it had to be spent. I had friends that had athletic scholarships, but those did not cover room and board, just tuition. I would recommend searching for as many types of scholarships that you can find...the more, the merrier! I'm older than dirt, so I didn't have the ability to use the internet to find mine; I had to rely on books and the guidance counseling office.
  • The scholarship fine print will let you know the limitations. Most let you use the money towards anything that supports your education and that includes room and board.
  • My son was granted an $85,000 scholarship, back in the 80s. This scholarship included everything, within reason.
