You're reading Do you think that America could have done something more worthwhile with the $120 billion spent every year on the Iraq war?

How can you tell? How can you say that with justification? What if America just left the Middle East alone? That's why they are pissed off, anyway - Iraqis aren't even allowed into the central of Baghdad...

Do you really want $300/barrel oil and $10/gallon gasoline? That's what we'd have if we just left the Middle East alone. Iran would move in, shut off the oil supply to the West (not caring one bit that they'd be killing their own economy in the process), and funding even bigger terrorist acts than 9/11. If we had finished the job in 1991, we wouldn't have had to watch Saddam thumb his nose at the world and pay France to run interference for TWELVE YEARS. And, if we hadn't pulled our support out of Afghanistan after the Soviets bugged out, there never would have been a Taliban and Osama bin Laden would quite likely be a friend to America, rather than the most hated man in the world.

My point is that the current mess was caused by not staying long enough to clean up the existing mess, and now that we are finally trying to clean it up, you want us to just drop it and let it grow into an even bigger mess?

I'd rather pay that much for oil than watch hundreds of thousands of Middle Eastern residents die from America bombing them, and from their suicide protests. The current mess was caused because America trained and armed the Taliban and then turned against them to have a reason to go to war, eventually. Pissed them off enough to fly some planes into the twin towers.
The current mess was caused by America going in there a week after 9/11, bombing the crap out of Afghanistan and taking over central Baghdad - pissing a lot of citizens and leaders off, combined with my next point.
Just to make one point clear though - the Taliban did not train themselves, the Bin Laden family have been close to the American Government for decades. America funded, trained and armed them during the 80's and turned around on them in 1991. For what reason, we will never know, but my best guess is war money - which is exactly why they are there now.

Plus - vehicles can run on anything combustable, so why are hundreds of people dying for the sake of oil? There's barely any left anyway, you could almost call it a thing of the past.

It's clear neither of us will ever be able to convince the other. Only history will show which one of us is right, and we'll probably both die in terrorist attacks long before then...

Lol, if you think so.
