When you try to remember something, neurotransmitters (the chemical/voltage signals between neurons) in the brain start firing like crazy. Your neurons fire transmitters to each other somewhat randomly, trying to find a relational pathway from the question to the answer. There are many pathways (connect-the-dots) for neutotransmitters to get from point A to point B. They travel down different pathways through the brain until the neuron cluster containing the memory is reached, and that is why you often go through a strange list of thoughts until you get to your memory.
