  • Probably just before the turn of the century. Between 1866 to 1895 some 10 million cattle were taken to the railroad cowtowns of Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona on trials over 1,000 miles long, taking between 12 and 16 weeks to complete.
  • For Rodeo, NM it ended soon after 1880. But for the most part, it varied. The era of the great over-land cattle drives ended with the coming of the rail yards to the small outlying areas. As more loading yards were built, the drives just got shorter and shorter. You could say that it dwindled down with more of a whimper than a bang.
