Since Mbs and Gbs are so common place now they have had the shortened nicknames for quite some time. Terabytes are becoming common place in business and are starting to be referred to as "Ters" (pronounced tear, like you are tearing a sheet of paper). Petabytes are not commonplace yet and still are refered to as Petabytes (same with Exa, etc). It general takes something becoming routine before it gets a nickname.

Despite working at a site where we have nearly two petabytes of storage, and regularly assign quotas in the terabytes, we don't yet have a shortened version of those words. "Ters" just sounds wrong to me. There's a hard sound to "Meg" and "Gig" that works well for a short word, and "Ter" and "Pet" don't quite have it.
