What type of paint did hippies paint their vans with and where can I get it cheap?

anything we could get our hands on ... house paint, craft paint ..anything so long as it was water proof ...even that didn't matter to much ...if it ran together it was 'cool man'!!

I am not a hippie but our neighbors used spray paint on their vw van. As a kid at the time I thought it looked cool.
