  • sounds like your thermostat needs replaced.
  • First thing check the water/coolant level.
  • thermostat is stuck open, my 98 contur did the same thing
  • The thermostat controls the rate at which the engine warms up, but does not impact the overall engine temperature. The thermostat is meant to keep coolant from flowing until the engine has warmed up a little and then the temperature of the coolant opens the thermostat and coolant flow for efficient engine cooling. A broken thermostat doesn't mean that the engine will run cold, it will quickly overheat if the coolant isn't flowing. Low coolant levels have the same impact. The system can't efficiently cool the engine and you will quickly get into an overheat situation dependent on the ambient temperature. On a cold day, low coolant may be OK, but if it's hot, you'll overheat. The coolant flows through the engine for cooling and through the heater core for heat in the passenger compartment. If coolant is low, the flow is not as efficient through the heater core and you can see the types of problems you are seeing this is the first and easiest thing to check. You may also need to check and flush the heater core to make sure that the flow is good. This can be done with a garden hose by just disconnecting the heater hoses and forcing water through the core. Another common problem with the Taurus is the blend door which controls air flow through the heater core. Check the HeaterTreater listing on Ebay for diagnostic procedures and pictures.
