Their producer James Guercio was contacted by the real Chicago Transit Authority, which objected to the band's use of the name; he responded by shortening the name to simply "Chicago."

Very good question. Although i do not have an honest answer, it may have been for the sake of space. Imagine a CD. the one word CHICAGO, is much shorter than Chicago Transit Authority. It also could be name recognition. lets face it, Chicago Transit Authority makes one think of a bus company. Also, there could have been infringement rights. Anyway, some changes are good and this was needed for whatever reason. It worked.
