  • It depends how the parents raise the kid. I am an only child and I am very independent. I paid my own way through college and I live on my own for over 5 years now. Some parents spoil their kids. My dad would rather eat a bug than give me money. LOL
  • Dependence because as an only child your parents give you everything you want so you learn to depend on others to give you everything
  • I think it fosters dependence, because the child is always looking to the parents for all of their attention, if they had brothers and sister, they would hang out with them more, and more independent from the parents.
  • I am an only child and was raised almost solely by my mother. I have been quite dependent on my mother, until recently. I have been paying my own way through college and grad school, but she has always taken care of everything else.
  • I think that it would usually teach dependence. I could be wrong, though.
  • I think being an only child teaches independence, they have to learn to make their own entertainment. They also seem to have an uncanny ability to talk to adults on their level. :)
  • I am an only child and I find that I am quite dependent in my relationships with people: parents, friends, boyfriend. It's not the best quality to have!
