"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town..." and so begins Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning novel about life and death, racial inequality, and redemption in the 1930's rural South. Maycomb was probably typical of most small towns during the Depression. "There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy, and no money to buy it with..." (Chapter one) Nobody had much of anything except poverty. Maycomb had a courthouse, a school, and a few stores and businesses. Half the population lived in town, and the other half, on farms.
