There is the Gaia theorem that proposes that we are just one interacting organism. It seems plausible to me. Er... no. There's far too much inorganic material to be considered an organism. I do consider the surface of the earth to be inhabited by a network of organisms dependent on one another, though.

Some ancient Greek and Roman philosophers wrote that this universe is a living being. There is a society in USA which says that the earth is a living being. I have read one book published by them.
