Sadly, it has become a symbol of 'status'. The proof that you have 'made it'. I see disgustingly huge diamond rings on a daily basis, and I am less than impressed.

If someone else is buying, I want a diamond; however, since I'm the one buying, I buy cubic because I just like the flash.

A diamond is the hardest known substance so it is vey useful for industrial purposes, and many people find it to look attractive although it really is just a shinny hard rock but one could argue the samething about gold and silver and they are used for decorative purposes too.
