There are two types of hulls, each has their advantages. Planing hulls lift the boat out of the water and are used where higher speeds are desired, but it takes more fuel to keep a boat "lifted". A displacement hull is designed to push the water around the sides of the boat (like on commercial fishing boats or cruise ships). These hulls tend to be more fuel efficient because they are operated at much lower speeds.

    Long, narrow and vee-shaped.

For sailing or power-driven vessels, catamaran (twin)hulls are generally more efficient than monohulls. Less hull in the water = less resistance = require less power than a similar sized monohull.
