if you just want to beat the game, no, it is not. if you want all the items and stuff, then yes, it is. after the first couple games, and if you recruit well, blitzball gets pretty easy. if you put the controls on "manual" (it is also easy if you get the jecht shot for tidus)

It is worth it because it's really fun after a while and you the key to blitzball is Brother, the pilot of the airship, and Tidus and his Ject Shot. Brother is really good because he is the fastest swimmer in the game.

If you want to get Wakka's other overdrives, yes it is worth it. I really don't care for that part of the game, but if you want to 100% everything it is a must.

I never did, I beat the game without even playing one game of Blitzball.

It took me ages to understand it, thinking I could always customise to get Wakka's ultimate weapon but after I learned I realised how easy it really is. Sure it is a bit boring once you know how to play and have developed to a point where it's no challenge anymore, but it is really worth it. Other than getting Wakka's weapon and sigil, there are tons of items to get as well that are always handy if you want to get all of Rikku's overdrives and kick some fiend ass!!
