Deet is the chemical that keeps the bugs away. Its even in my sons toddler bug spray, but in a very low concentration. The only people who should not use bug spray with deet are pregnany women. Otherwise you'll want to use it. They recomend using deet to stop the spread of West Nile Virus.

Check the june '06 Consumer Reports. They checked for effectiveness of insect repellents, and it looks like the ones with DEET are still the most effective in general.

It is the absolute, most powerful, most effective mosquito and bug repellent you can get. If you don't want to have problems with mosquitos, ticks, chiggers, and the like, use DEET based insect repellents. You can get 100% DEET repellent, as well, a great space saver in you camping gear. If you want to use something without DEET, PLEASE try it out enough to be sure it's as effective as you think BEFORE getting out in the middle of nowhere and then finding out it's really a seasoning sauce for mosquitos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEET
