  • Cigarettes do cause cancer, I no of two men in their early 20's who have died from lung cancer due to smoking. It has also been proven that people who are non smokers working in a smoking environment long term die of lung cancer due to the second hand smoke. Smoking kills 1 out every 2, so your mom must be very lucky. There is also research to prove that smoking during pregnancy can cause birth defects in the respitory tract of these tiny babies.
  • It is like Russian Roullette. You might get cancer you might not. It is up to you if you want to play the game. BTW not all smokers get cancer some get emphazema or other lung diseases.
  • It's not just lung cancer, emphazema or other lung diseases... it has also been shown that brain tumors have been disected to find the same chemicals in cigarettes are also in the tumors.
  • Yes, smoking does cause lung cancer.
  • They can cause Lung Cancer.
  • Lung cancer runs in my family... but its only the smoker and occasionally the wife of a stubborn "I won't leave the house to smoke" smoker that gets it.
  • Yes. Every smoker might not get it, but it increases your risk.
  • Do you work for Philip Morris?
  • They cause not only lung cancer; but, throat and mouth cancer too.
  • Yes, and not only lung cancer, it's responsible for other cancers as well and many diseases. Cangrene- ewwww! Ovarian cancer has been linked to smoking as well.
  • Yes http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=2962
  • Smoking Does Not Cause Lung Cancer (According to WHO/CDC Data)* http://www.journaloftheoretics.com/Editorials/Vol-1/e1-4.htm
  • It may not be the underlying cause but it certainly increases the risk of any person that is susceptible to chest complaints. It certainly does not help mouth cancer.
  • Smoking ciggarrettes will increase the chances of getting lung cancer, however alone it will not cause it. The greatest scientists in the world after applying logic and real statistics were not able to prove any correlation, except that smoking 50 years within your life will give you an 8% chance overall of developing lung cancer. The average risk is 1%. It also depends on personal genes and traits, however assuming you have no vital disorders, it can be assumed that this data should matter. Despite overwhelming amounts of evidence, provided by the world organization of health, and even respected scientists, unaffiliated with the tobacco companies have for the most part concluded that smoking will not give you lung cancer alone, it is imperative to look at their findings with the belief that they are truthful. Why do I say this? Because EVERYONE says that smoking WILL give you lung cancer. And that 90% of all lung cancer deaths and more are smoke related. This information is false. As the website I pointed out earlier clearly states that the research paper began finding a correlation between lung cancer and smoking through the web and literature, the writer had to change his thesis because after 50 hrs of searching he concluded that most anti smoking information as biased or completely wrong. The few conditions that were true were hardly mentioned. Go to http://www.journaloftheoretics.com/ if you give a shit enough to learn more. HOWEVER DO NOT MISINTERPRET ME AND SAY THAT SMOKING IS GOOD OR THAT I AM FOR GETTING PEOPLE TO SMOKE! Smoking is bad for you, and smoking does have very serious side effects which HAVE BEEN PROVEN WITH REAL SCIENCE AS OPPOSED TO JUNK SCIENCE. Such an effect is emphezemia. And yes, this isn't spelled correctly. The reason why I am writing this much is because I live in the U.S., therefore I have grown up with a sense of love for my country for the freedom it gives its citizens, (legal and illegal) and the pursuit of happiness, which I personally believe is a wonderful thing. However, when people are told what to and not to do especially when proven not to hurt others or when told it is bad for them (and it is) but with made up gobbledygook junk science, then their freedom is being hurt, since they are being told what to say and think. AND I WILL NOT BY ANY FUCKING MEANS LET THIS HAPPEN. Little factiod: The Nazi party of Germany (yes, they started WWII)were the first anti-smoking campaign worldwide.
  • Yes and yes smoking causes cancer to some people who have a particular gene defect (according to research done at McGill university and a study in China please verify - and is highly addictive. I have been a smoker for over 30 years but I have not developed the disease yet. I believe there is a genetic disposition to develop lung cancer. I have also worked with Asbestos powder for a brake manufacturer who did not respect any health or safety precautions and I am still very healthy. A number of my friends who smoked for less than 15 years (much less than I do) have already died years ago from lung cancer, mouth cancer, throat cancer and esophageal cancer . Research and statistics shows that it is very deadly (including all tobacco products such as Chewing tobacco that I used to chew and snuff which I took for many years.) Please if you are a smoker try to quit before it is too late. Don't take any chances especially if you are young. Save your life and your money for your family's sake. Don't be a silly jerk like I am.
  • Smoking causes cancer. Nine out of ten lung cancers are caused by smoking. Of course, there are genes that can make some people more liable to cancer than the rest of the population, but even without those genes, smoking causes cancer. Cancer occurs when the delicate machinery of the cell goes wrong. The cell has many defence mechanisms against going wrong, and people with genes "for" cancer just have a few of those mechanisms not working, so the machinery goes wrong more easily. Smoking is like hitting that delicate machinery with a hammer - if it didn't break before, it will now.
  • Smoking *highly* increases the risk that you will get the lung cancer. More you smoke, higher the risk increase. That being said, there are of course: a) people who smoke 40 cigarettes daily and never get the lung cancer b) people who are lifetime non-smokers and die of the lung cancer anyway. This is called a good/bad luck. It's pretty much like there are criminals that never get caught (a) as well as innocent people who end up in jail due to miscarriage of justice (b). In other words, by smoking you are looking for trouble. With a bit of luck you will never get into it but keep in mind it is by no means a minor risk increase. We are talking about perhaps +1000% risk increase in strong smokers, not some measly +30% or so. Also it should be noted that lung cancer, especially NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) variant, which is most common in smokers, has awfully high mortality rate, one of the highest of all kinds of cancer. This is mainly because small tumours are asymptomatic and patients typically come in a higher stage of the disease when radical treatment is no longer possible. Mean survival of patients with NSCLC is about 1 year from diagnosis (thanks to aggressive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, biological therapy, etc.). It would be a couple months without it. I am not saying that every smoker will die of lung cancer, that's just not true. What I am saying is that medical professionals pretty much unanimously agree on that smoking is not worth it given the above.
  • I hope you are just asking this to get commentary and are not really this clueless.
  • My friend died of non hodgkinsons lymphoma of the neck because he was a passive smoker as his wife refused to stop smoking in the house. It took him ten years to die, and during that time he had numerous operations and chemotherapy. I used to take him to hospital to see the specialist. The last time I took him turned out to be the very last because the specialist told him that there was nothing else they could to do for him. He then gave up fighting it and within two weeks he died in a local hospice.Smoking is not the only cause of cancer as young children die of it too.
  • My Father used to smoke Camels no filter and he wound up with lung cancer and died 6 months later smoking also kills in other ways also but i watched my father a man of about 200 lbs shrink to just 90lbs in a couple of months
  • There's no denying the consistency in the statistical studies. Cigarettes cause not only lung cancer but anal cancer, bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer.
