  • Zoloft (Sertraline) is an Anti- Depressant and Lithium is an Anti Manic , Anti- Depressant used a lot for bipolar disorder. Zoloft I am going to try to find something on side effects, because what I can tell you isn't good and I don't want to get into that, It would be one sided
  • I have taken both. Lithium will flatline your emotions. You will neither be manic or depressed. A house on fire might be about as impressive as spilled milk and vice versa. IF you swing wildly and erratically lithium will work very well to stop it. It is toxic however. I had to have blood levels checked routinely to make sure I wasn't going toxic. I did take too much once to see what would happen...it was not a good idea. Zoloft is good for depression. The most noticeable side effect for me was the missing orgasm. The 4 hour erection thing without results. Both are effective, depends on what you really need. Plenty of literature available on both.
  • There are a multitude of anti-depressants on the market, you just have to find one that properly suits you. I have been taking Elavil for the past four years, and really like it! It makes me tired so I sleep better at night, and it also doubles as a pain killer. I have a lot of pain, which is partly why I am depressed (at least I think), so it works well for me. As for bi-polar medication, maybe try Abilify. Abilify isn't as heavy-duty as Lithium, so it shouldn't make you feel so dead, or blah.
  • Lithium can cause kidney damage. Also a lot of doctors will put you on thyroid meds with it because it has a tendency to kill you thyroid function, generally permanently.
  • Zoloft is fairly similar to Prozac. Although Prozac dampens the emotions, where Zoloft doesn't dampen them as much but still significantly. There are side effects, but usually pass after taking Zoloft for a few weeks. These can include insomnia, heartburn, diarrhea, somnalance (sleeping for many more hours than usual) weight gain, hyperactivity and ejaculatory delay. Although these sound bad, it doesn't mean you will get ALL these side effects. Zoloft is prescribed for depression and is very effective for sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I don't know anything about Lithium. Sorry.
