Usually with a razor :)...but seriously!! I and I would think most men find that shaving in the direction of hair growth minimises cuts and pain. Some men have been blessed with a face that doesn't require much care when shaving and these men I envy forever. However, I think most men have to take a fair degree of care when shaving and they all develop a routine over time that works for them. The skin on the face and neck is much more delicate and sensitive than most others places on the body and of course, the face is what everyone looks at in a person, so even the smallest of defects / stubble / cuts / nicks / imperfections is glaringly obvious. In addition, the clean shaven look has been drilled into the majority of boys and men for generations and so the pressure to conform with this cultural ritual is quite overwhelming and hard to oppose in this modern age, unless you have a life where your appearance isn't so important. If however you need a very close shave, you need to shave against the direction of hair growth. This is how I do it; IF YOU ARE ASKING THIS QUESTION BECAUSE YOU WANT TO SHAVE SOMEONE ELSE, I SUGGEST YOU PRACTICE SHAVING 'DOWNWARDS' A COUPLE OF TIMES UNTIL YOU GET THE HANG OF IT AND LEARN WHEN AND WHERE TO APPLY WHAT KIND OF FORCE/PRESSURE AND WHERE TO BE VERY DELICATE. 1. Put your shaving brush in a cup of reasonably hot water, together with a fresh razor. 2. It is best to shave after a shower but if this is not possible, wash your face first and then also spray/dowse your face with warm water with a hand/hose shower), increasing in stages to hot water for about 5 minutes, until the temperature is too much for you to take (but without burning yourself). This procedure opens the skin pores and will reduce the pain/discomfort of shaving, of which there is always be a certain amount of, depending on what cards you've been dealt by Mother Nature. 3. Take the shaving brush, drain the majority of water from it and then dip/swirl it in your chosen shaving cream (cream is best). Now with the hot cream-covered brush, lather up your shaving area of your face and neck, fully and liberally. If no cream is available, you can use foam or soap but the results won't be as good or as painless. 4. When you've done lathering, turn on the hot water on a low-moderate flow rate and let it run throughout your shave. Take your razor from the cup of hot water and SLOWLY AND CAREFULLY, from the bottom of your neck, shave upwards in small, smooth, flowing strokes against the hair growth. Shave all your neck first, then your cheeks/sides, then under your nose and finally your chin, where the hair is the toughest usually. Ensure that at all times, you stretch the skin with the other hand to ensure the skin doesn't get snagged/nicked by the razor, which is painful if you do. AFTER EVERY 2-4 STROKES OF SHAVING, RINSE THE RAZOR UNDER THE FLOWING HOT WATER TO KEEP THE RAZOR CLEAR OF ANY SHAVED BRISTLE ETC. DON'T RUSH SHAVING as doing so almost definitely means you'll cut yourself and suffer razor burn/bleeding. Take your time and make sure all areas have been shaved. 5. When you're done, pass your fingers across your shaved face and you shouldn't be able to feel any bristle or hair. 6. Now rinse your face with as cold a water as you can stand, for about 3-5 minutes. 7. Rest for 2 minutes. 8. Rinse your face a second time with cold water for about 1-2 minutes. This process contracts the skin and stops minor custs from bleeding. Dry with a fresh towel or paper towels (but this is a bit messy). 9. Afterwards, check your face in the mirror. If any cuts are still bleeding, apply a styptic pencil to any cuts - it stops any bleeding INSTANTLY (but don't share your styptic pencil with ANYONE - EVER, because you have made contact with your open cuts and your blood. Likewise, don't share other people's stypic pencils). You should now have a baby smooth face. 10. Go and show your face to your girl/woman and let her stroke your face with her fingers - she may like that. Done!!

Mens face shaving....101! In advance, have a can of shaving cream, a respectable razor. a water source, and a wash cloth and towel ready. Either wash or wet your face and leave wet. shake the can of shaving cream. expel shaving cream, the approx. size of a chicken egg, into your left palm. on your wet face and neck , begin smoothing the shaving cream, until everything is covered, except your eyes and mouth. wet the razor. shake excess water off. now, you are ready to begin shaving. do not overuse shaving cream...not necessary. Start at base of your right ear and shave downward, toward your chin. not much pressure on the razor...it will cut you!. repeat same on the left side of face. it gets touchy here..for a closer shave, now shave the opposite direction on each side of face. Under the nose. again, shave downward toward the mouth. keep area really wet. shake razor in sink water, as you go along. wet again and now shave in opposite direction....very carefully to avoid a nick or cut. The neck is pretty standard. start by shaving directly under the chin, with short downward strokes. long strokes here will cut your throat, for real. follow this pattern on both sides of your neck. and whola! you're shaving! Cleanup. with a wet wash cloth, wipe your face until it shines.......after shave lotion is your choice. Shaving is for a lifetime, so get use to it!
