Why does using henna to dye the hair, cause such a bad headache?

I saw a documentary on something related to this recently. Two little girls got henna tattoos - but they weren't natural henna coloured (I can't recall off hand what the "natural" colour(s) are). They developed a severe reaction to it and, after much pain, are now unable to ever dye their hair, use suntan lotion and a great number of other things. There is some chemical used to dye henna that reacts very badly with the human body. It probably isn't all henna but has additives.

Henna shouldn't cause a headache. It should have a pleasant cool feeling. A headache might have been triggered by additives in the paste.
