A Guardian Ad Litem is appointed by the court to represent your child's wishes in a courtroom. This person has personal contact with the child, will tell the court what your child wants to happen, and then tells the court what they believe would be in the best interests of the child. They do not represent any of the adults in the situation, only the child. They have access to many personal records of the child such as school, medical, etc. It is actually a very good thing for your child to have a GAL. They are an impartial party with only the child's interest at heart.

I recently went thru this. The GAL will meet with the kids and ask them questions to get a feel of what they want. He may come to your house and your exs home to see which is a better living environment and to see how you act with your children. They focus on trying to give the kids their rights and frown upon one parent badgering the other to the kids. They are there to listen to the children and try to figure out what is best for them. Your exs lawyer can still try to get more time thru his lawyer even after the GAL gives his recommendation. Hang in there this was a very long process for my family.
