Why does internet speed decrease when using Utorrent or any other P2P app?

Do you mean browsing speed or your actual connection speed? Browsing speed is obviously going to fall as part of your bandwidth is given over to the P2P app. Unless configured to do so it will probably take as much as it can. If you mean a general performance drop I would be thinking ISP interference. A few other possibilities as well :)

You know, I believe this is the dumbest question I've ever answered. Speed decreases because your connection can only send and receive so much data, and these programs take up a good amount of this limit. Their sole purpose is to download and upload files as fast as possible. On a related note, you CAN set limits to these programs to reduce the speed loss.

Many ISPs will throttle(limit) your bandwidth if they detect certain P2P programs. That's why uTorrent (and others) have Protocol Encryption, as a way to sneak past the ISP filters. It doesn't always work however, and you'll sometimes find your connection unbearably slow, even if you're not downloading or uploading at a significant rate.

Simple math. My rural dial-up maxes out at about 2.8K/sec (slower than hell). If eMule is downloading at 2.6K/sec, then that leaves me 0.2K/sec for other things like Firefox, Avira updates, etcetera. Let us put it another way. You have $20 in your pocket. You buy lunch at the mall for $8. After lunch, you see a really neat game on sale for $19.99. Why can't you buy it?

Because you're using your connection. Your bandwidth is only so big. P2P uses the same connection your internet browser, email opener, ftp server, etc. use. Try and get three big fat buffoons through a narrow hallway. The hallway is your bandwidth. The fatter the buffoon, the more bandwidth it takes up. P2P will usually try to share the space with other buffoons, but if it's greedy, it'll take up the whole corridor, meaning that another buffoon will struggle to squeeze past. Kind of like the Three Stooges, Woop! Woop! Woop!
