Small amounts of caffiene make a person temporarily more mentally alert. But this is followed by a period of fatigue which is especially intense if larger amounts are consumed.

I drink coffee or energy drinks to kick-start my energy. I have sub-hypothyroidism (meaning, my TSH is under 10 but over 0.5), and my energy doesn't "wake up" all on its own. I can ggo the whole day feeling tired, if I don't get enough caffeine. But this benefit is mainly exclusive to slow thyroid and like problems.
