It could be...Sometimes people use them for naughty activities on answerbag, like trolling...Sometimes they are just used to ask personal questions, that you don't want on your main account.

They can be. I don't have a sock puppet that I wouldn't admit was mine. I do my own dirty work. I'm a lot of things but a sneak and a coward are not on the list.

In Answerbag, "sock puppet" refers to people who sign up for multiple IDs with the intent to use them maliciously to down-rate their enemies and/or up-rate their friends. Now, having multiple IDs, in itself, is no big deal. Many people use them legitimately to ask or answer controversial questions. Anonymnity is a central theme to just about the whole Internet thing. But when those IDs are used to manipulate the ratings system, that's considered an abuse of the Bag.
