It was invented by Roddenberry. In fact, we didn't learn the "origin" of the term until Star Trek: Enterprise, where it was explained that it was actually a contraction of the name Menshara (a Vulcan word, though we never learned exactly what planet Menshara was...).

We simply don't know enough planets to have developed a multi-level classification for them In our own system, we know two types: the small rocky planets and the gas giants. We have recently that there are planets orbiting other stars - quite a lot of them, in fact. Because they are easier to discover, most of the ones we know about are large and are therefore conjectured to be gas giants, though we don't really know. But we really know little about these planets other than their mass and distance from their sun (and hence orbital period).

The M-Class has air bags, reclining leather bucket seats, a Hurst shifter and automatic circumnavigation guidance. Oh... Window clip beer holders and fuzzy mirror dice are available as both an option, or aftermarket purchase!

It is a scientific term. Earth is a Class -M planet, for, along with an oxygen rich atmosphere, vast quantities of water, organic life in many forms, it is the ideal location and environment for Humanoid life to flourish. http://www.trekmania.net/science/planets.htm
