There is no "set" answer. I have traveled as much as 32 hours non-stop & 13 time zones with only minor trouble acclimating to the new environment and time while I have sometimes traveled cross-country 3 time zones and never adjusted even when I took melatonin. Much has to do with which direction you fly, east vs. west and whether you can sleep and wake up normally in a new time zone and thus "trick" your body into thinking you are on the new time. I also set my watch to the time of destination right away and consider myself on that time even before I board. So, how long does it take? It could be hours with a short nap or days with overnight sleep.
