In the US it's generally a romantic holiday that's celebrated by couples and others of different religions and philosophies so it's not an exclusively Christian holiday. In that regard it's usually more secular than religious. It's usually intended to be an occasion where SO's exchange heart-shaped gifts to express their love for each other and that's not bound by any religion.
