It's when you hit the jump button just before going around a sharp corner. If you do this at the correct time you should power slide around the corner by pushing the joystick in the direction you need to turn.

Simply: you need to master the art of the drift (powerslide) for all MarioKart games. Keep wiggling direction back and forth and get mini-turbos! You will see the flame change colour - wait and it will change again! then release for mini-turbo. Search mini-turbo in google and you will find all sorts of tips and VIDS to help you. can't win without it!
