Is it legal to jump a cueball onto a rail as long as it comes back down again?

    As long as you don't deliberately miscue to make the ball come off the bed of the table and the cue ball comes to rest again on the bed of the table, it is legal. Older rules stated that it could even hit the light, because the light was considered part of the table.

    it is legal in one pocket, nine ball, and straight pool, but not in 8 ball.

    In most disciplines it is a legal shot as long as the cueball did not cause any other part of the equipment to disturb the layout of the table. ex. cueball knocks the chalk onto the table which rolls a ball.
