One of three ways come to mind. 1. A very heavy load or short circuit caused a very large current drain on the battery. This causes the battery to get hot. I would think you would know when something like that happened. 2. A battery charger was hooked up to the battery and chargetd it to quickly or was left on to long. If you have a converter with an automatic charger in it it might have failed causing this problem. 3. Fire or excessivly hot environment, but it would have to be very hot to melt a battery.

The most likely cause would be an overcharge... I have seen a battery on a small tractor explode like a bomb...
