It might not save you petrol being in neutral at the traffic lights (the engine must idle anyway), but it will save wear on your clutch pedal. Especially if you're using the clutch to hold you on an incline.
As for going down a hill in neutral, you then can't use the engine to help slow you down and have to resort to brakes. This will again wear your brakes down more or if you're really unlucky (or own an old all-drum car) can cause brake fade. Answer 3 out of 4 by Anonymous on Jun 9, 2006 at 6:09 pm Permalink

I fail to see how being in neutral will "back" your car into the car behind you...
