Would any harm be done if I used an HE detergent in a top-loading washing machine?

No harm though it might not clean as well with more water. It is meant to be less sudsy and use less water. However don't do the reverse, using regular in a front loader. That could be really nasty:-)

Trader Joe's and Ecos brands of HE detergent bottles say to use 2 ounces, and for HE machines, 1 ounce. The implication is that you can use it in non-HE machines, but simply need to use more to make up for dilution.

You just won't have as much suds.... and it won't clean as well. HE is formulated to use in a machine that requires much less water. In a pinch, I'd double the amount recommended, or at least use the amount required for a heavy cleaning cycle and go for it... I'd rather have clean clothes than not ;)
