How often does a comment fail to post? Should you avoid approaching the limit of characters in the box to avoid 'failure to post'?

Very often. It's not about the length of the comment, it's about the system. That's why for very long comments, I type them first on Word then copy paste them. Short comments are easy to retype. I can't say the same thing for long ones.
