Why is it you see homeless people asking for spare change for a coffee all day long but they neva go buy one when you give them some money?

You are making a generalization here. Have you followed every homeless person to document that they never buy a cup of coffee? I have seen several do exactly that. We have several panhandlers that skip the euphemisms and have signs that say, "The truth - I need a beer." :o)

Maybe they need new underpants and are too ashamed to go around asking people for money for new underwear????

My son once gave his allowance (4 quarters)to a beggar as we entered the grocery. After shopping, we got a pizza, next door, and there was the beggar, putting my son's quarters into the video game! So much for helping to feed the poor.

Because people take the easy quick way and give them money. I usually offer to take them to the coffee or to a diner and pay for a meal. But just about every time they turn me down, wanting the money instead.

Well, i saw this and went & bought the guy a coffee and a bar of chocolate cause i feel for homeless people & the guy got up and gave me a hug & said thank you. It depends really... =)

It depends on the person - some are going to use it for good and others for alcohol (which, for the record...I think if I was homeless I'd be drunk a lot) it's just a matter of whether or not you want to take the chance. They're already not satisfied with their lives because they're homeless so what's a dollar or a couple quarters going to hurt you when it will put a smile on their face for a split second. You not giving them money isn't going to stop them from getting money for booze from the next person. I suggest going to buy them the coffee yourself so you know they're doing what you want with the money. I tend to go off on tangents...I just rambled way too much!!! :)

I don't really care what they decide to spend the money on. I give because I want them to have it. I want them to have a moment where they money in their pocket if nothing else.

if you give them money, its theirs and they are free to do what they wish with it. its not a binding contract, they should have a choice considering how little they already have

because a lot of them have addictions and really want to buy booze or crack. no not all do that but many do.

I always give them any spare drugs I have on me, or go and buy them a bottle of Sherry. If you give them money, they'll only go and waste it on food, or cups of tea!
