I've never had a problem with them. I never *eat* them, they're a tad tough, I just bung them in the sauce or stew and let the essence seep out.
I heard that there is a risk of cutting your throat if you swallow a bay leaf whole.
Bay leafs aren't poisonous to humans, only for some livestock. Its best not to eat the bay leaf because it may cut your larynx or intestines if not ground up and chewed thoroughly. A lot of people because of this, will put them in a bouquet garni.
Why would you use something toxic to flavor your food?
You COULD eat them, and be fine. I don't recommend it because they're awfully tough to chew.
i dont kno. i hav eatten so many in pot roasts n sauces. well bits of them atleast. i think its only wen they r fresh from the tree right?
The edible bay leaf is fine.
