It is an early pregnancy symptom; however, it can also be a sign that your period is coming. Ironically, most pregnancy symptoms are also signs that your period is on its way! It's a wait and see kind of thing. Once you have missed your period, take a pregnancy test.

Possibly. However, my wife's breasts sometimes hurt when she (or I) press them in and she's never been pregnant in her life.

You could be pregnant, or you could just be premenstrual. Personally, my boobs are so tender before my period it's agony. But if you are nervous, take a home pregnancy test or go to your gyn or a clinic and have them administer a test, if only to put your mind at ease.
