  • The phrasing of Guthrie's quote is somewhat similar to "don't leave mad, just leave", though I think the meaning is entirely different. "Take it easy, but take it" could be applied to something sexual, or could mean 'be gentle/easy with this lamp but take it', which I don't think for a minute IS what it means. Not a lot of help here, was I? :(
  • I've always thought he meant to relax and don't take life so seriously... but don't relax so much that you miss what's right in front of you. Take life easy, but be sure to get all you can out of it! Another Woody Guthrie quote may help explain this one a little, as well: “Life has got a habit of not standing hitched. You got to ride it like you find it. You got to change with it. If a day goes by that don't change some of your old notions for new ones, that is just about like trying to milk a dead cow.” Keep an open mind, be willing to change, take it easy, and always TAKE IT.
  • To the best of my knowledge this quote was originally the closing line from the song "Talking Union", by The Almanac Singers who consisted of Woodie Guthrie, Pete Seager, Millard Lampell and Lee Hays- the first three sharing the credit for writing it in 1941. My guess is that this is the first use of the quote though it was popularized by Studs Turkel, a labor supporting author and radio journalist who used it to sign off on his radio show for 45 years. The song is a string of advice for labor organizers, so Im pretty sure that Its implying to standing up for your rights and not about anything sexual, though with a little imagination I can definatly picture the line going into an Issic Hays song.
  • this quote has been my email signature for at least 8 years now... first read it in a book called zen guitar az
  • if the opposite of taking it easy is stressing everything then taking it easy is not stressing everything, but i think it's just saying don't relax so far that you become lazy and don't care about a thing.
  • I love that quote. It's one of my mottoes! I wish I could live by it more often though, I have trouble with the first part..
  • Interesting. +5
  • Think it just means chill. If it's a sex thing, maybe he wasn't that wild.
  • Anything you take from life, do it with ease, but make sure you take something. I think this quote can be applied most to opportunities.
  • Well, in 1975 I met a beautiful young Danish girl on a ferry of the west coast of Scotland. She had the above phrase "Take it easy, but take it" embroidered on her shoulder bag. So I read it, and did as it instructed me. And we had a lovely time together. Her name was Elva.
