I think it is MORE ethical to campaign on your own dime rather than taking money from others. It makes you LESS beholden to others. At the point you're spending your money, you are your own man, so to speak. As to the legal issue, some people want to limit such donations to the cap that is set for everyone else ($2,500 per campaign), but I would argue that limits exists in order to prevent the undue influence that one group or person could have over a candidate. If it is the candidate's own money that is donated to his/her campaign, that argument is lost. I do not think there should be any limits to how much you are able to donate to your own campaign.
