Depends on where he was from but my guess would be Africa if he was British or American. I think the allies were fighting in Italy at that time too, but I'm not sure.

The majority of WWII veterens in Europe did not actually fight in the war. If you know what division he was in I could tell you when and where he served.

It would help if you could fill in a few details. What country? What service (Army, Navy, etc.), was he combat arms, intelligence, service, security, MP, etc.? It seems that everyone assumes that you are British or American, but your grandfather could have served in Russia as a Soviet, or anywhere in Europe as a German.
