Good question, and harder than it looks. There is such a huge variety. Some like a lot of slashing and cutting and blood and guts and running and screaming. (Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Freddy and Jason's Nightmare on Halloween Street, part 598; et. al.) Others like the psychological stuff, such as Silence of the Lambs and anything by Hitchcock. And if you want a good laugh, there are some that are so bad they're good: Tremors, Lake Placid, Anaconda... And I haven't even touched the classics -the old and the new- Frankenstein, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Dracula, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Interview with a Vampire... I hope this will jump start the discussion and that some more people will jump in with their ideas.

I think a great horror movie should contain fear, suspense, unexpected surprizes that make you jump, twists, history and depth in the plot,an element of mystery and psychology,a twist of humour can be excellent it should be captivating to watch also a sequel or 2 is the one thing that leaves you hanging. my favourite horror movies are ju-on the grudge the original japanese version, hostel 1&2,from dusk till dawn and many grindhouse movies from the 1970s spoofs are pretty good as well such as planet terror.
