Scientifically speaking, since they are not closely related, there are high chances that many of the genes are located at different sections of the DNA. Combining these, may create a creature with 4 legs however they may have serious defects. The Donkey and the Horse produce a sterile Mule. Since Donkey's and Horse's are closely related the defects are not so serious (well I guess being sterile is kind of big). In the case of an elephant and rhino, the fetus may not even live for more than a few days.
