  • Yes, and yes. I am not sure what TSS is exactly except that it is a very serious infection. But if you read the inserts in the tampon box it will tell you not to use a tampon for more than 8 hours and to use the least absorbency that you can. The inserts may also explain more about what TSS is.
  • The Highest RISK factor for getting Toxic Shock is HIGH Absobency tampons. As most tampons contain Rayon (a man-made fibre)Toxic Shock is a real risk. The next Risk Factor is CONTIUOUS USE of tampons during a period. It's best to Alternate with towels/pads at least once per day, preferably at night. Leaving a tampon inside the vagina does NOT necessarily cause Toxic Shock. (On another page in Answerbag, girls have left a tampon or two in place for over a month and not got Toxic Shock). Another factor is that girls immune system has not fully developed. It can happen to anybody, so it's best NOT to use tampons at all.
  • Well I'm a guy, but a girl at my university was recently hospitalized with TSS due to leaving the tampon in for too long. And this is not a joke or a shock story, but she had the lower parts of her legs amputated. Best to consult a doctor in my opinion.
