Average? It really depends on WHERE you buy one. I only recommend buying a dog (we're speaking, buying, not adopting, of course I recommend adopting too) from a REPUTABLE breeder. This means a breeder that shows and titles their dogs in something (preferably conformation for starters.) They should all be health tested and free from common ailments for the breed. Hopefully they have a good temperament and the breeder is in good standing with the AKC (if you're purchasing in the US.) These dogs are going to cost more, but you will have a support system throughout your dog's life - someone to turn to when you have a question - someone who actually CARES and wants to know where their dogs are at all times. You can purchase through the paper, and this will be cheaper, but these are known as "back yard breeders." Often times they have a good heart and love their dogs, but they don't show them, don't health test and probably won't be a good support system 5 years from now. The worst place to go is a Pet Store. These dogs are never health tested, often come ill, they lived usually in poor conditions prior to their sale and were not properly socialized with the world and human contact. Unfortunately, many people go to the pet store because it's easy. They don't interview you to make sure you are a right fit for the puppy. This is imporant. Different dogs should live with different families depending on their temperament. Also, pet stores are NOT cheap. You will not get a "deal" going to the pet store, and will most likely be only getting yourself into headaches down the road - either with immediate illnesses which are an expense, or severe problems later on, like allergies, heart problems, hip problems or knee problems etc etc. If you're interested in finding a GOOD golden puppy, start a search online for the Golden Retriever Club Of America. You will find lots of information about the breed and very good breeders which will help you find the right puppy. Good luck and choose wisely! :)

400-800 dollars if you live in the us. try to get one frm a respectable breeder. make sure you lok into the parents history for cancer and hip diesiease. you should really consider getting a golden retriever from a animal shelter 25% of animals in shelters are full breed. Golden retreivers are americas favorite dog. I hope you get one. Try to get one over 6 weeks and under 6 months they eat a lot so be prepared to pay a lot for their food. They need plenty of water but its all worth it to have a beautiful dog.
