who checks their batteries??? those damn things scream at you every two minutes or so to let you know when they're hungry. That's when I change mine.

No need. We have a central alarm (burglar and fire). When I was in an apartment, I checked it once a month because my downstairs neighbor liked to grill inside (prohibited on patio/balcony area). That made me a little nervous.

Mine are connected up to the main electrics of the house, so if the battery goes dead then i dont need to worry, though i dont see the point in them having batteries when they are connected to the mains anyway

Every six months. When I reset the clocks for daylight savings changes, I check them. I usually only change them once a year. And yes, I have at least one fire extinguisher on every level of the house.

bagicide stayed 10 months too long

A couple of days ago, when I forgot a skillet on the stove and set them all off. I do check them several times a year and usually replace the batteries when the time changes.

Just put batteries in them three weeks ago. They all were missing batteries for months. Made a trip to the dollar store and got some 9 volts recently.

    Yarnlady is happy every day

That is sad to see. Our smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors both get checked every season change, four times a year.

    It's easy to remember

1st day = battery day (1st day of Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter)

Mine are in fine working order. Yesterday, I was making homemade potato chips, and apparently I got the oil too hot, and it smoked up the whole house, I had to disconnect the alarms until the smoke cleared..

It's hardwired, but it really needs to be in our house, my mom thinks they are used as cooking timers.

I just changed my smoke alarms to ones that use my voice to wake the children and give them instructions instead of a blaring noise they would sleep through. I love them and show them off to company all the time. If the battery goes dead, I'll know it.

Batteries less than one year old and they are only for back up as the alarms are hardwired into the house. If there's power they will go off, even without batteries. Unfortunately there is no turning them off by taking out the batteries, which I've wanted to do a couple of times lol!
