Oil became very important during the start of the Twentieth Century. The Middle East has a lot of oil. The British and others have been teabagging the region ever since, angering the Arabs and such.

The politics of the Middle East have been unstable since the Crusades. It's geographical location makes it the perfect blending spot for Asia, Africa and Europe. Such a blending of different cultures, religions, societies, policies and people begs for instability. Recently, of course, the global fixation on steady supplies of black gold has been the cause.
